BOOK AUTHOR LUNCHEON JUNE 8TH.
It was definately a treat for book lovers, when Mark de Castrique, author of the "Buryin' Barry Undertaking" series came to the Beech Mountain Club as special guest of the Beech Bookies, Books on Beech and High-Timers book clubs at their annual Book and Author luncheon. Mark's books are set in the North Carolina Mountains, where he grew up, and he is a very entertaining speaker. There was a very large crowd, and everyone enjoyed the delicious luncheon.

GARDEN AND HERB SOCIETY MEETING-JUNE8TH
For the first meeting of the year, Ann Martin gave an interesting demonstration on building a terrarium. Delicious refreshments were served. On June 22nd the meeting will be held at the Recreation Pavillion and we will be making garden mosaic stepping stones and pots. Supplies will be provided, however, you may want to be saving old chipped or broken china, glass, stones, etc. If you would like more information on our group, call Ann Martin @ 387-9086 or Suzanne Powell @ 387-9250.

Tennessee Wins Battle of the Smokies Media Challenge
May 30 - June 1
Press Release by Craig Distl
submitted by Debbie Canady
BEECH MOUNTAIN, N.C. – Not only did Tennessee defend its title in the second annual Battle of the Smokies Media Golf Challenge, it did so in convincing fashion. The Tennessee squad rolled to a 35-25 victory over North Carolina in the friendly competition, co-hosted by Beech Mountain Club and Sugar Mountain Golf Club, May 31-June 2. The Battle of the Smokies is an annual event that features teams of media from both states battling head-to-head in a Ryder Cup-style format. Unlike a year ago when a sudden death playoff was needed, the Tennesseans opened a sizable lead on the second day and never looked back. For their efforts, the victors were again awarded the “coveted” two-foot trophy adorned with a sculpture of a black bear, and they also received bragging rights for another year. “Everything was fantastic – the camaraderie, the weather and especially the courses,” said Tennessee captain Joe Hall of Tee Times magazine in Nashville. “Most of us had never played either course before. They are in great condition with scenic views from nearly every tee.” North Carolina will attempt to turn the tables on their Tennessee counterparts next year, when the Battle of the Smokies crosses the border to the Volunteer State. Next year’s event takes place at Eagle’s Landing Golf Club in Sevierville, Tennessee. Eagle’s Landing has a new course under construction and is expanding to 36 holes in 2010.

MIMOSA MORNING
Although the weather was not good on Beech, it was perfect to attend Mimosa Morning at the Clubhouse, and enjoy the delicious Mimosas and pastries that Chef Roger whipped up. Beth Holcomb, Recreation Director, led the festivities. Tables were set up to show all kinds of fun classes that are available for BMC members. And even our General Mgr and Chief Financial Officer, came over to drive members from the parking lot, up to the Clubhouse. Everyone enjoyed seeing and talking with old friends, and learning about all the activities available. For more information, to sign up for activities and classes, register for Day Camp or schedule your massage or esthetic service, call Recreation at 387-4208 ext. 229.
