GARDEN AND HERB SOCIETY TEA -AUGUST-30

Our membership and guests enjoyed our Annual Tea, which was held at Carol Richardt's beautiful home. The group was led by Carol Klein this year with many interesting meetings and additional work being done on the Memorial Butterfly Garden next to the Tennis Courts. If you have any Perenial plants that you would like to donate, call Suzanne Powell @ 387-9250. Definately keep this group in your plans for next year. It is composed of ladies who are golfers, trip takers, tennis players, bridge players, etc, and is a wonderful way to meet other interesting Beech Mountain Club members.

NANCY'S NEW DEER RESISTANT (?) GARDEN

I live on Pine Ridge below the Clubhouse, and we have a vacant lot next door that the Deer use to get from the lower valley to the Golf Course, and they like a snack before they cross the street. Their favorites are Hostas, which are now being eaten when they regrow one inch, and Daylily blooms. They ate so many that my blooms would hide in the greenery, so I gave 1/3 of my Daylillies to the Memorial Garden next to the Tennis Courts. Since I want to keep my friendship with my Deer feeding friends, I have decided to only grow "Deer Resistant" plants in my front garden.

I purchased two white and one red Coneflower on the Deer Resistant table at the Mountaineer Garden Center for $8 each and two Cherokee Sunset Rudbeckia and one Zinnia at Lowes, all of which had Deer Resistant tags, with this clarification on the back side: "Deer Resistant but not Deer proof depending on scarcity of food".

(That sure makes me feel better) The total price was around $35. A bottle of Deer Off costs $17-18. These plants were planted before 11:00 on August 28, 2010, and I do not intend to spray them with any product to keep Deer away. (at least until they start getting eaten. Stay tuned!

BMLGA PLAYDAY-AUGUST 24TH

The first thing we did, after gathering together, was to take a picture of our group, and send it to Doris Abraham and her husband, Tom, who is going to Shands for tests, and haven't been able to come up yet this year. We wanted them to know that we have been thinking about them and hope to see them soon.

Our game was a "Step Aside Scramble", which means that if your shot is chosen, you may not participate in the next shot. It is lots of fun, fair, and quicker than a regular scramble. Then we had a delicious luncheon at the Club.

This was the last day for our President, Becky Welsh, who has done a wonderful job. Next year, the BMLGA will be led by Karen Levine, President; Roz Kaplan, VP; Marlene Reetz, Secretary; and Linda Kingerman, Tresurer.

THE COLONEL'S TOURNAMENT

We're talking Alan Brister, of course in the top left hand picture. He runs a golf group for men, and also enjoys holding tournaments where women can play. Anyone can sign up, and after a very interesting format, he also provides lunch for all participants at the Fairway Cafe. It was lots of fun, as you can tell by the smiles of everyone having lunch together. 1st place team was: Ted Matney, Bob Gasko, Darcy Gsteiger, and Nancy Raymond. 2nd place team was: Bill Holder, Marty Cohen, Barbara Knowles, and Sondra Rice. 3rd Place team was: Ron Tulino, Frank Neill, Ray LaForge, and Larry Shefter. It began as a rainy day and there were many cancellations, but the hale and hearty were there to play.
