An ongoing home remodeling at 119 Saint Andrews Rd has caused a traffic harzard since late winter. The contractor and his workers are parking their trucks on the roadway blocking one lane of travel. As this location is just prior to a curve in the roadway, traffic driving around the obstruction is in danger from vehicles proceeding in the opposite direction. In the comments are conversations with Town Hall you might find amusing. Please e-mail, write or call Chief Hefner (Chief@townofbeechmountain.com) if you are so inclined.

Chief Hefner:
I am writing to advise you of a dangerous situation, which you are probably already aware of but which I feel needs to be brought to your attention again.
According to Title IV, Traffic Code of the Town ordinances, which are published on the Town's website, "...no person or company may place or leave any object within the Town's right-of-way that would obstruct or impede driving vision, impair traffic or create a hazard..." . The construction vehicles parked on the road at 119 St. Andrews make that area very dangerous. Traffic from above the construction site is largely unaware of the hazard until it rounds the curve and discovers one lane is completely shut down. Traffic coming up the hill is presented with an even more dangerous hazard in that it must decide for itself if it is safe to pass this blocked lane going into a blind curve. This location currently creates a definite obstruction and impairment of vision, traffic impediment and hazard, thereby violating the ordinance multiple times.
It appears there are quite a few areas where the construction workers could park their cars in the general proximity of the site. Additionally, if there are items needed off of any of the vehicles parked there, they could simply pull into the driveway of the site, offload what is needed, then move the vehicle to a safe area close by. Even if there are no immediate sites where the workers can park, someone could shuttle them in and out. The law is clear and the vast majority of people using this road are not the workers - they are the residents and visitors using that public access.
I have had so many close calls driving that way that I now go out of my way to drive a different route for safety. I can't imagine that I am the only one. Therefore, the residents and visitors to that area of Beech Mountain are basically being restricted from the use of a public road for the benefit of very few. As I am sure you must be aware of the situation and tried to remedy it in the past, I would suggest stronger measures be taken to enforce the safety of anyone using this road. Otherwise, someone getting hurt, or worse, because of the situation will ultimately make it a costly mistake for all of us if they have to sue because of negligence.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

REPLY FROM THE CHIEF
We are aware of the problem and are trying to correct it. The Contractor is meeting the requirements of the Town Ordinance but the location is very bad. We have talked to the building inspector who is going to speak with the contractor to try and help with this. Thank you for the information
Chief Hefner
Dear Chief Hefner
I'm sorry to bother you again with the same problem. The last couple of weeks the trucks being parked in front of 119 Saint Andrews road are back. Today there were so many trucks in front of that house that as I was walking by I couldn't walk by and allow the cars coming the other way to get by. They are not allowed to block the road of one entire lane when there are only two roads available (they are not allowed period). Additionally it makes it impossible to see around the curb and oncoming traffic HAS TO GO INTO THE WRONG LANE OF TRAFFIC. Cones don't get it, you can't see around the turn.
They have been told so many times and are ignoring you, me,common sense, etc. If anyone gets into a accident because of them, the town of Beech, the Police, the construction company and people in the construction company WILL BE personally sued. I don't know what else to do? How many times do you have to tell construction people not to park on a free flowing lane of traffic; it should be common sense not to park there especially when they can park to the side of Fairway drive, across the street in the EMPTY lot, people's driveway that are still on vacation and quite truthfully I don't care if they have to park and hike to their site, THEY ARE BREAKING THE LAW AND SETTING UP AN ACCIDENT TO HAPPEN.
thank you

Dear Reba
I am sorry about being a pain in the tush but it isn't a bad spot for the workers to park if they took an extra minute out of their day. There is a huge empty lot across the street, there are several parking areas where people are still on vacation. They can put atleast one car over to the side on Fairway drive, etc. They just want the easiest and quickest spot for themselves without any regard for the safety of the people that live on Beech. This is a accident waiting to happen and it is going to be a good one because traffic in one direction has to go into the oncoming traffic from the other direction in a BLIND curve.
