HISTORY OF BEECH MOUNTAIN TO BE RELEASED

Beech Mountain, a picture book of Beech's history, from wilderness to resort, written by the Beech Mountain Historical Society, will be released by Arcadia Publishing the week of September 7. After September 11, the book will be widely available locally, including several Beech Mountain Club locations, Fred's, and the Chamber at Beech Mountain; the Book Shoppe in Banner Elk; the Mast Store and Black Bear Books, as well as large chains and on-line book sellers. The first chance to see and purchase the book will be at a special book signing party on September 11. The Beech Mountain Club is sponsoring the event, 4:30 to 6:00 in the Pub. The club is furnishing hors d'oeuvres, and there will be a cash bar. The members of the Beech Mountain Historical Society will be present to sell books and sign them. The books are $24.00, including tax. A special pack of 15 historic postcards will also be available for $9.00, including tax.

The Beech Mountain Historical Society was formed in 2006 by a group of interested residents who wanted to preserve the rich history of Beech Mountain, focusing on the coming of the resort and its development. The Society has sixteen members, and all had a part in the writing. The book took its present focus when Arcadia Publishing was chosen as publisher. Beech Mountain is a part of Arcadia's well known Images of America series. There are 129 images in the book, many of them vintage photos, lent by private collections, and these images vividly tell the story of Beech Mountain, up to the present. Ann Iles is the editor of the book; Jerry Shinn is Copy Editor, and Ralph Miller is the Photography Editor. Other members of the Historical Society who did research and writing are Marge Bailey, Dee Dee Berger, Connie Bowen, Charlotte Clinger, Hank Cooper, Anne Curran, Jack Dickerson, Judy Hilsmier, Nancy Kennedy, Scotty King, Barbara Piquet, Anne Shinn, and Becky Wheeler.
