REMEMBER THE BEECH MTN ART GUILD SHOW

It will be held on Saturday, July 21st, from 9:00 A.M. to 4:40 P.M. at the BMC Recreation Room. I snuck by early on Friday to take some pictures. The quality of the art is very high, and would make a perfect addition to your mountain home.

Some of the BMC artists pictured are Elaine Holland, Jack Dickerson, Karen Britt, Nancy Hoffman, and Suzzane Svejcar.

Scenes from Twilight Golf

We had a wonderful crowd to enjoy the beautiful weather. Here are some of the players. Jim Abbott and Norm McCarvill are discussing their plan for winning. Kathy Dorosy, Ruth Richards, and Sarah Abbott are talking about one of Ruth's putts. Max Richards is waiting for the play to begin, and the last picture is a team playing during the tournament on Hole #3.

Next week, the Pro Shop will pair the players, so any couple interested in playing, just sign up at the Pro Shop. It is a great way to meet other BMC Members. Don't forget to sign up for dinner at the Club House. That's part of the fun of Twilight Golf.

John Carrin mentioned that the new Golf Practice range may be opened by next Wednesday. The present one may be closed part of this week, so call ahead, before you plan to practice.

Report on BM Roads

Do you have a bad place on your road? Pine Ridge is beautifully stripped, but there are several "ditches" to damage your car. The photo shows a big one across the street from 311 Pine Ridge. Also be careful of an area just beyond 523 Pine Ridge. Please write in and give us a warning, about a bad place in your neighborhood, and maybe the town will get involved and fix these areas. I don't think drivers expect bad areas on beautifully stripped roads.

STORM WATER AND YOUR RAIN GARDEN

Wendy Pathoprsty, water quality specialist with the N.C. Cooperative Extension in Watauga County, spoke at the Garden and Herb Club Meeting, today. She showed us how we can put plants around water runoff areas, and make a difference for our beautiful streams on Beech. Here is a web site to get more information on this subject: www.bae.ncsu.edu/topic/raingarden

News from the Beech Mountain Historical Society

Yes, Beech Mountain now has its own Historical Society. We've been meeting for a year, and our goal is to publish a history of Beech Mountain, beginning with the coming of the resort. We've been researching and interviewing, as well as collecting photos, brochures, and memorabilia of all kinds. We're beginning to write up some of our findings, but the research and collecting still goes on. It's not too late to join us.We're doing a lot of work, learning a lot, and having a lot of fun. And it is just the right time to help us, if you have photos or other collectibles, or information that would add interest and color to our resort's history. We will carefully copy what you lend us. Or we will accept donations of photos and memorabalia. On our list of goals is the establishment of a history room, where we can store and display items of interest. We are particularly interested in photos of the club's original buildings, and in photos of the Ski Village, Skating Rink, Red Baron Room, Austrian performers, ski slopes and lifts, the cardboard box derby, bathing beauty contest on skis, ski races, and ballet on skis. If you want to join us, or if you want to lend or donate photos or other documents, please contact Ann Iles, 387-2930, or iles@skybest.com.
A promise for the next posting: a good Beech Mountain story from the "old days."

Here is a Healthy Deal for You!!

I'm an old timer, who has never used a piece of exercise eqpt, with exception of our small bike at our home. So I called Nancy Frye, at the BMC Fitness Center, and made an appt to see about how difficult it is. In about 1/2 hour, she took me by each machine, wrote down each setting I should use on a personal chart, and had me use it, while she was watching. There is no charge for this service. Then I went to the BMC office and signed up for one month at $47, and if I choose to extend my Fitness Center membership, this money will be applied to a longer period. I was also given a personal code, to get in the fitness center at any time, and I can retrieve my chart to help me with the machine settings.

That wasn't so hard! Yes, I think I'm going to start doing this. What about you?

The Hike to Westbowl Has Been Canceled

The Recreation Dept called and said the area of the trail is being developed, and we are no longer able to hike there. The Low Impact Hikers will now go to Price Lake Loop, on the Blue Ridge. It is 2.5 miles and the charge for an off the mountain trip will be $8.00. Call the Recreation Dept for reservations, wear your hiking shoes, take water and lunch, and your walking stick. Sorry!

Nancy

Free Hike to Westbowl!

This Wednesday, the Low Impact Hikers will go to Westbowl. Call Rec at 387-4208 and push button for front desk, to make a reservation. We meet at the Alpen Haus at 9:00 with hiking shoes, water and lunch. It's a good idea to bring a walking stick. These pictures are from several years ago, but's it's been one of my favorites on Beech, and you will enjoy the long range views.

Remember Fred's Wonderful Concerts!!

They are now starting at 6:30, and please remember to bring a chair, and a jacket. The chilly air rolls down the mountain at that location. Last night, one of my favorites, Joe Shannon and his group performed. Next Sunday, The Cockman Family will be there. And the price is FREE!

And remember to thank Fred and Margie on the way in or out!

There will be 4th of July Fireworks!!!

I didn't think I heard any fireworks sounds on the Pig Roast night, so I called the Chamber of Commerce. The Fireworks are scheduled for the evening of the 4th. There will be no charge. The Ski Beech Parking lots will be open. The View House will not be open, nor will the Alpen Haus. (the trees now block the view of fireworks from there) Take your jacket, and take a chair.

HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!!!!

New Stripes for the 4th of July!!!

I think one of the most important things for the summer people, are decent stripes on Beech Mtn Rds. Many of us have vision problems, and our guests, be they older or younger, are not used to driving on mountain roads...especially in rainy and foggy conditions. Our children have even taken the wrong turn off a curve in the Beech Mtn Pky in bad weather conditions, and they have been here many times before. The yellow stripe on Pine Ridge Rd. was just painted this morning. Club House Rd has not been done yet, but is on the schedule. I don't know the latest status on the town portion of the Beech Mtn Pkwy. The yellow line looked a little shaky a couple of days ago. Freshly painted stripes makes our community not only a safer place to live, but a more attractive one. Please let our Town Mgr or Town Council know how you feel.

Please Keep these Folks in your Thoughts and Prayers

I have some sad postings today. Jim and Rachel Dunn's daughter, Leslie, died unexpectedly this week of a massive heart attack. They spent many happy moments on the mountain.

Betty Stewart's father died last week. Betty and Harold Stewart live on Locust Ridge Rd.

Paul Asheim, our next door neighbor on Pine Ridge, died this month. He was a wonderful man! Francis, his wife, is currently at their FL home, but hopes to return this fall for a short stay.

Ed Waligroski, who is currently living in Elizabethton, TN, had 4 stents implanted, and is doing very well.

If you have information on other former or present club members, let me know.
