Yes, Virginia, It DOES snow big in North Carolina

Today the skies were gray, then blue, then gray. It is trying hard to bring us another couple of inches of snow on top of the accumulated snow we have received since the week before Christmas. The 10th tee, fairway and green are shown here with about 10" of snow sitting up nicely with only deer tracks in the foreground.

It may be cold but at least today was in the plus figures. It was 4 degrees when I took these at about 11am. Very little wind made it feel much warmer as I was very comfortable in just a fleece jacket...no gloves. Much better than the -10 and 45mph winds we have had this week.

You will be seeing the rhododendrons and hydrangeas in bloom again in June but that seems almost impossible to see the archway today where they normally bloom.

The Clubhouse in all of its winter splendor.

The golf pro shop never looked so good...where are those golfers with their orange golf balls?

Icicles abound on the Clubhouse building, as shown above and below.

The BMLGA has a "Ringer, Birdie, and Chip In" season long program, headed by Doris Abraham. After each playday, the scorecards are turn in to Doris, who keeps track of everything. Here are the winners:

Flight A: 1st place: Becky Welsh (who had 13 birdies!)
2nd place: Doris Abraham & Jeanie Courtney

3rd place: Marlene Reetz
Flight C 1st place: Judy Helsabeck
2nd place: Donna Halvosa

Thanks to all the hard work by Doris, who also reported the most improved Ringer for 2009 was Becky Welsh. As I reported above, she had 13 birdies. One member had 7, two members had 6, one member 5, three had 4, four had 3, and all the rest had 2, 1, or none, out of 41 players involved. Congratulations to Becky, who also serves as President of the BMLGA.

BMLGA PLAYDAY- OCTOBER 6TH

Our game today was Match Play: Red vs Blue, Best Ball of Twosome. When all play was completed, the Red and Blue Scores were added, and the Red Team beat the Blue Team, 58 1/2 to 49 1/2. I have also included some leaf pictures. The 14th Fairway is almost outstanding, and the 18th Fairway is coming more beautiful every day. And there are some pictures of some of head covers our ladies are using.

Spooky Halloween Party

October 1, 2009

Thanks to Nancy Brunzos and Sandy Carr, the Beech Mountain Club pavilion was the site of some spooks, gouls and goblins dancing the night away.

Barbara and Paul Piquet are quite the couple, ready for a night of fun.

Fred and Carol Richardt sitting this one out

A prize winner - funniest costume!

The buffet included a chili cookoff, cornbread cookoff and many other goodies. My favorite was the witches brew. Thanks, Suzanne

Sandy a/k/a 'Catwoman' Carr was full of energy and enthusiasm (as usual!)
in co-hosting this event

Steve and Andi Saunders are glad to be spending more time
in Beech Mountain these days and we are certainly glad to have them around more

A good time was had by all

Tombstone Alley

Another prize winner! Congrats, Mona

Thanks, again, Nancy and Sandy. We look forward to next year's event.

IT'S A FUN FALL SEASON ON THE COURSE

Jim and I went out to play 9 holes of golf on our beautiful, sunny, warm, course. (finally) As we drove up to #7, there was a cart at the top of the hill. After a minute, I looked up and saw two figures to the right of the sidewalk at the top of the hill. I asked Jim, "What are those guys doing?" He answered, "They're Scarecrowing around." Check out the picture, and thanks to Peg and Ed Bradley for their seasonal decorations.

HIKING IS FUN!

If you have never hiked, you should try it. There are beautiful trails with a variety of difficulty. Kim Barley, Cocoa, his brown Lab, Bobby Nemerson, Marge Pooser, and myself hiked the Rough Ridge Trail at milepost 302.8 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. It is an easy to moderate rated trail and the rewards are the views at the top! Wear hiking shoes (mine were $20 at Walmart quite a few years ago), a walking stick (a long tree branch will do), water and lunch. The leaves should be perfect this next week.

Niners Sept 24th, 09

Before the wind starts blowing the leaves

And before we need our winter outfits

But, the weather is lovely and the sun is out!

BMLGA PLAYDAY IN THE COLD! SEPT 29TH.

I was too chicken to play this morning. It was right around 40* on our porch and there was lots of cold wind blowing. I received an E-Mail from Karen Levine, our Vice-President, this evening with this picture. These 18 holers are tough! This is September 29th. I checked Ray's Weather Site. It was 36.6 at Fred's at 7:13 A.M. and the low wind chill temp at Fred's at 8:31 was 26.2. Golf anyone?
