GARDEN & HERB SOCIETY MEETING

This was our first meeting of the year. We had delicious goodies, and many previous and new members. There is an active program for this year. Our next meeting, on Monday, June 23, will be a trip to Water Heaven center, across from Sugar Mountain. We will meet at the Alpen Haus at 10:00 and car pool there, and then have lunch together afterwards.

Members are working on new plantings for the RAR center, and a Butterfly way station garden near Lake Coffey. We will also work on the gardens near the Genesis treatment center near Buckeye Lake.

Suzzane Powell, President, opened the meeting. Ilene Libb gave a demonstration on growing lettuce, and Barbara Moore on growing tomatoes.

If you are interested in learning more about gardening, and meeting a very nice group of ladies, call Rec at 387-4208 for more information.

MIMOSA MORNING-JUNE 6TH.

Debbie Canady and I are both going to cover this event. I arrived early, because I have a golf game, and she was already there and is going to cover the crowd, when they arrive.

You can see how much work is involved in the set up of this event. The Rec Staff is working setting it up. The pool looks beautiful.

The Garden and Herb Society brought herbs for sale, and they were all set to go, early. It's events like this that make The Beech Mountain Club, so special!

TWILIGHT GOLF ON JUNE 5TH.

It was a beautiful evening, the field was full, so remember to sign up early for next Th. Everyone had lots of fun, including Victor, Marv and Donna Cohen's new dog that they are training this summer. The final picture is of #9 with the Flame Azaleas in full bloom.
If you would like to E-Mail a picture of yourself, appearing on the BLOG, just right click on the picture, click on "copy", and open an E-Mail, and click on "paste". Your friends or family would love it!

Assistant Golf Pro Assists More Than Golfers

Assistant Golf Pro, Paul Canady, aids one of the newest additions to Beech Mountain.

When I pulled out of my driveway to go to work yesterday a doe was in the road, obviously upset. She would start to go to one side of the road, then to the other, then stand in the middle and look at me. When I rolled my window down I heard a small noise just off the road next to my car. On closer inspection I found that "momma" was upset because her newborn had fallen into a 3' hole next to a hiking path. I called Paul and he walked down and pulled her/him up and out of the hole. She was very unstable, either from weakness or because she was so young. We left her alone to reunite with her mom and we are hoping "Lucky" and mom come by to visit soon.

GOLF COMMITTEE MEETING ON JUNE 3 @ 4:00.

There was a nice crowd at the Golf Membership meeting. Many important things were discussed. My personal opinion is that the BMC should post an agenda on their web site for all meetings, even if they are posted the night before.

Here are some pictures of the Golf Committee:

(1) Hal Welsh, President of the BMMGA, and Larry Tyner, acting Golf Committe Chr.

(2) Larry Tyner, Joan Wichman, President of the BMLGA and Marilyn Adkins, President of the BMLN. (notice the beautiful new table covers with the new BMC Logo.

(3) Our Pro, John Carrin, who runs the Pro Shop and all the tournaments, with great professional ability and care.

If you are a BMC member and interested in joining any of these Beech Mtn Golf Associations, call John at 387-2372. BMLGA (18 holes) plays on Tuesday at 9:00. BMMGA (18 holes) plays on Wednesday at 9:00 and BMLN (9 holes) plays on Thursday at 9:00. You must have a certain level of ability and be signed up by a certain date to play, and arrive by 8:30.

Grounds and Greens Committee Meeting @ 3:00 on June 3rd.

It's so important to attend committee meetings. You can find a schedule in the "News and Notes", either at activity locations or on the Club Website.

The meetings are held in our beautifully redecorated RAR, across from the new pool. Here are 3 pictures.

(1) Allen Borden, Board Member and Chairman of the Greens, Bob Josselyn, Al Dale, and Rory Ellington.

(2) Brian Barnes, GM/COO and Matt LaVigne, Asst GM/CFO.

(3) Rory Ellington, Golf Course Superintendent, who usually wears a cap and a smile, and is one of the hardest workers I know.
The members loved Rory's improvements and changes on the golf course this winter.

BMLGA PLAYDAY

We had a wonderful Stableford Tournament today. It keeps you on your toes, because you earn points for your total score on each hole. Prizes are awarded to the winners, at the end of the day.

I thought you might like to meet some of our members. You have probably met most of them in other activities on Beech.

In picture (1) Bettye Seaman is having a chat with Carol Mccarvill and Sarah Abbott, who have just returned to the mountain.

In picture (2) Carol Matney, Kathy Buschman, Louise Dale, and Betsy Clark, who has just arrived.

In picture (3) Sondra Rice, another recent returnee, and Jeanie Courtney.

In picture (4) Carol Smith, Linda Croft, and Donna Halvosa.

In picture (5) A group of our members, listening to the rules of the game.

Call the Pro Shop to get more information about our group. It's a wonderful way to meet other people and have a lot of fun!

WE NEED YOUR PICTURES!

Many BMC members have digital cameras. Send me an attachment of your favorite picture, taken in the High Country, and I will put it in the BLOG. Let us know your name and where the picture was taken. Let us all enjoy it. My name is Nancy Raymond and my E-Mail address is captjandn2@yahoo.com.

Here is a picture of the 10th fairway at the BMC, that was taken while playing Twilight Golf at 6:00P.M. You can see the foursome ahead of us, on the green.

I hope to hear from you.

Twilight Golf

This was the fourth Th of the month, and instead of "Pick your own Partners", on this date, the Pro Shop pairs you with another couple. In earlier years, this was the rule, and we always enjoyed meeting new Beech Mtn Club Members. We had a wonderful time, and played with Steve and Carol Smith, and then had a delicious dinner at the Clubhouse together.

The pictures contain the usual lining up of the carts, but notice the 14th Fairway. The trees are almost out, and it was a beautiful evening. Many of the new cart paths are in the process of being paved. If you are a golfer, come out and play 9 holes on Thursday evenings. It is a scramble and lots of fun. You must sign up on a sheet in the new members room at the Pro Shop, and call the Clubhouse for dinner reservations. We hope to meet you soon!

BMLGA HAS A "STEP ASIDE SCRAMBLE"

Our tournament directors, Judy Spiegel and Marge Payne-Smith, came up with a wonderful new tournament. named "Step Aside Scramble". Teams are made up of four players, and everyone tees off. The best drive is chosen, and the member who hit it, steps aside and lets the other 3 players play the next shot, and so it goes, into the cup. It was fun to play, and perfect for our meeting and luncheon, as almost all teams finished in four hours.

Here are a few pictures. You can tell that a large portion of our 85 members have now arrived on the mountain, and signed up for the tournament. In the second picture, our golf Pro, John Carrin, is standing with our President, Joan Wichman, to make announcements before play. In the third picture, our members are enjoying the delicious lunch in our clubhouse.

Remember, if you are a BMC member and have a yearly beginning Handicap Index of 37.1, you will be welcome to play once before joining. You will be allowed to pay $5 for prizes and participate in that day's tournament. Please call our President, Joan Wichman for information at 387-3656.
