The BMC has unfortunately stopped it's hiking programs, but the Town of Beech Mounain has a hike scheduled on the first Tuesday of every month. You can buy hiking maps at Fred's or at the Buckeye Lake Recreation Center or check them out on the web: hikebeechmountain.com. Here are several pictures of the Grassy Gap Creek Trail, that runs from Hawthorne (off Pine Ridge) to near the Buckeye Lake Recreation Center on Grassy Gap Creek Road. (an extension of Pine Ridge)
Kim Barley, Suzzanne Svejcar, and myself hiked from the Recreation Center. Kim and Suzzanne took their dogs, lunch, and water. You can walk as far as you want. Another plan is to park one car at the Recreation Center and the other at the Hawthorne Trail head and hike downhill. Walking sticks are very helpful. Just find a sturdy tree branch before you go.
Just look at the size of the trees! It is a wonderful way to experience nature!
