While taking a storm break from working at Cloud Nine on Grassy Gap Loop Road (across the street from the golf course third fairway), Bill Watson, Phillip and Jackie witnessed the lightning that damaged the base of this small third fairway golf course tree. The lightning ran out from the base of the tree, threw grass and divits in the air and created about a four foot deep hole in the fairway grass. This strike was so close to Cloud Nine; the noise was like an explosion.
Bill Watson said how important it is to immediately get off the golf course during thunder and lightning storms.

Phillip demonstrated his curiosity about the lightning created third fairway hole depth by putting his arm in the hole. "I can't reach the bottom, let's get a rake handle to see how deep it might go." Bill Watson said a few golf balls can get lost in this deep but small (radius) hole.

With this yellow rake handle, used as a measuring device, Jackie, Phillip and Bill Watson check out the depth of the lightning created hole on the third fairway.
I thought some golfers could use a thunder and lightning storm safety reminder.
